Promoting Young Girls to Play the Sport They Desire:
The number of female participants in contact sports is growing immensely. There are three professional football teams in the U.S. There are 28 universities that have a women’s wrestling team and are offering scholarships for recruits. Women’s wrestling is a recognized Olympic sport. There are also organized boxing and martial arts programs for adolescent and adult females. Multiple universities have intramural, club, and varsity levels of women’s rugby. Other sports like hockey are available for women to play as well.
Female involvement in contact sports is a new idea that the U.S. culture has not fully embraced or accepted. Although female involvement is rapidly growing, society still grips onto the perception that women are fragile, and some sports are inappropriate for them. However, this is definitely not the case since there are so many leagues and clubs readily available for women to play in today. There is also a great progression in support, involvement, and opportunity for these special athletes that are breaking through gender barriers. Unfortunately, many female athletes involved in contact sports are sexualized, and that needs to stop. Female athletes deserve recognition for their achievements and success, rather than for their body. Also, young girls need to be supported and accepted in any sport that they choose. Girls across the world should feel comfortable in any sporting environment, and not be made fun of or discouraged because of their gender. The advancement for girls and women in contact sports has come a long way, but further acceptance and support is needed. These athletes need our help, so be a proud member and advocate for the CSEU today!
